Dyson Unveils Ultra-Slim PencilVac: Revolutionary Design With Four Conical Brushes

Dyson has once again pushed the boundaries of vacuum cleaner design with its latest innovation. The company known for reinventing household appliances has announced what it claims is the world's slimmest vacuum cleaner - a remarkable departure from conventional vacuum designs that could change how we think about home cleaning tools.

Revolutionary Slim Design

The new Dyson PencilVac features an incredibly streamlined profile that more closely resembles a broom than a traditional vacuum cleaner. With a handle diameter of just 38mm (1.5 inches) - the same thickness as Dyson's Supersonic r hair dryer - the PencilVac represents a dramatic departure from bulkier vacuum designs. Weighing in at just under four pounds (1.8kg), it's significantly lighter than most cordless vacuums on the market, which typically weigh between 5.7-6.6 pounds. This ultra-thin profile was achieved by integrating the battery, motor, and electronics directly into the handle, eliminating the need for Dyson's signature cyclone technology that typically creates a bulky top section.

Innovative Motor Technology

At the heart of the PencilVac is Dyson's smallest and fastest vacuum motor to date. The new Hyperdymium 140k motor measures just 28mm in diameter but spins at an impressive 140,000 revolutions per minute to generate 55 air watts (AW) of suction power. While this is less powerful than Dyson's flagship Gen5detect (which offers 280AW), the motor technology represents a significant engineering achievement given its compact size. The motor is based on the same technology used in Dyson's hair care products, demonstrating the company's ability to cross-pollinate innovations across product categories.

Groundbreaking Fluffycones Cleaning Head

Perhaps the most visually distinctive feature of the PencilVac is its unique cleaning head, which replaces traditional roller brushes with four conical brush bars Dyson calls Fluffycones. These cone-shaped brushes rotate in opposite directions, allowing the vacuum to clean effectively whether pushed forward or pulled backward. The tapered design serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics - the conical shape helps direct long hair down to the narrow end where it can be sucked up rather than becoming tangled around the brushes, a common frustration with traditional vacuum designs.

Enhanced Visibility and Edge Cleaning

The PencilVac incorporates green LED lights on both the front and back of the cleaning head that illuminate dust particles, making them more visible during cleaning. This feature, similar to the laser technology in Dyson's Detect line but using LEDs instead, helps users see tiny particles that might otherwise be missed. The Fluffycones also slightly protrude at the sides, improving edge cleaning capabilities and allowing the vacuum to reach dirt in corners and along baseboards more effectively.

Innovative Dust Collection System

Despite its slim profile, Dyson has developed clever solutions for dust collection. The PencilVac features a new two-stage dust filtration system that prevents clogging and performance loss. While the physical bin capacity is just 0.08 liters, Dyson claims its new dust compression system can effectively hold five times that amount by using air to compact collected debris. The emptying mechanism has also been redesigned with what Dyson calls a syringe, no-touch bin ejection mechanism that simultaneously empties the bin and cleans internal components.

Smart Features and Connectivity

Breaking new ground for Dyson vacuums, the PencilVac is the first to connect to the MyDyson mobile app. This connectivity provides users with additional settings, maintenance alerts, and step-by-step care instructions. The vacuum also features a small LCD screen on the handle that displays the current cleaning mode and remaining battery life. Unlike many Dyson models that use a trigger mechanism, the PencilVac employs button operation for easier handling during extended cleaning sessions.

Practical Limitations

The PencilVac's innovative design does come with some trade-offs. Its cleaning head is primarily designed for hard floors rather than carpeting, positioning it as a specialist tool rather than an all-purpose vacuum. Battery life is limited to approximately 30 minutes on the lowest power setting, though Dyson will sell additional swappable batteries to extend cleaning time. The dust bin capacity, while enhanced through compression technology, remains smaller than Dyson's other models.

Availability and Outlook

The PencilVac will launch first in Japan later this year, followed by Korea, with Australian availability scheduled for August 2025. However, consumers in the US and UK will have to wait until 2026 to get their hands on this innovative cleaning tool. Pricing details have not yet been announced. As Dyson continues to reimagine household appliances, the PencilVac represents a bold step toward more ergonomic, specialized cleaning tools that prioritize maneuverability and ease of use in specific cleaning scenarios.
