Insta360 GO 3S: Tiny 4K Powerhouse Arrives with Key Upgrades

Insta360 has unveiled its latest miniature action camera, the GO 3S, bringing long-awaited 4K recording capabilities to its thumb-sized form factor. This new model builds upon last year's popular GO 3 with several noteworthy improvements:

4K Finally Arrives

The headline feature is undoubtedly the jump to 4K/30fps video recording, nearly doubling the resolution of its predecessor. While some may lament the lack of 60fps options, the GO 3S does offer enhanced slow-motion capabilities:

  • 1080p at 200fps
  • 2.7K at 100fps

Under the Hood Upgrades

Powering these video improvements is a new chip boasting 50% more processing power. Insta360 has also focused on enhancing low-light performance, promising better clarity, brightness, and color saturation in challenging lighting conditions.

Design and Usability

The GO 3S retains the ultra-compact, magnetic design that made its predecessor so versatile. New additions include:

  • Native JPG support (no more cumbersome INSP format)
  • Hand gesture controls
  • Compatibility with Apple's Find My network
  • Improved waterproofing (33 feet vs. 16 feet)
  • Base storage increased to 64GB

Pricing and Availability

Despite the upgrades, Insta360 has maintained competitive pricing:

  • Standard 64GB bundle: $399 USD / 1,598 Yuan
  • 128GB option: 2,798 Yuan (approx. $416 USD)

The Insta360 GO 3S is available now in Arctic White and Midnight Black color options.

The Verdict

The GO 3S addresses many of the pain points of the original GO 3, particularly with its 4K capabilities and usability improvements. While it may not satisfy users craving higher frame rates, its unmatched portability and growing feature set make it a compelling option for vloggers and action enthusiasts alike.

Update: Tuesday July 02

The Insta360 GO 3S now supports Apple's Find My network, allowing users to locate the camera through the Find My app when paired with an iPhone, as long as it has battery power. This feature works regardless of whether the camera is powered on or off, but may be limited underwater due to Bluetooth signal interference. The camera also introduces a new MegaView FOV setting for ultra-wide shots with reduced distortion, an Interval Video function for extended recording sessions, and a Dynamic Timelapse effect for simulated panning shots. Additionally, the GO 3S features automatic orientation detection for horizontal or vertical shooting.
