Motorola Unveils Razr Plus 2024: A Foldable Phone with Massive Cover Screen and AI Capabilities
Motorola has announced its latest foldable smartphone, the Razr Plus 2024, bringing significant upgrades to its popular clamshell design. Set to launch on July 24th with a price tag of $999, the new Razr Plus aims to compete with high-end foldables while maintaining the same price point as its predecessor.
Massive Cover Screen Takes Center Stage
The standout feature of the Razr Plus 2024 is its enormous 4-inch cover screen, which now spans almost the entire front of the device when closed. This larger external display allows for more functionality without opening the phone, including running full apps and even using AI features like Google's Gemini.
Hardware Improvements Across the Board
Motorola has made several key hardware upgrades:
- Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset for improved performance and AI capabilities
- 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB)
- Larger 4,000mAh battery with faster 45W wired and 15W wireless charging
- Brighter 6.9-inch internal pOLED display (3,000 nits peak brightness)
- IPX8 water resistance rating
Camera System Overhaul
The Razr Plus 2024 features a new dual 50MP camera system:
- 50MP main wide-angle sensor
- 50MP 2x telephoto lens (replacing the ultrawide from last year's model)
Motorola claims improved image processing and new AI-powered features like Adaptive Stabilization and Action Shot for better photos and videos.
AI Takes Center Stage
Motorola is leaning heavily into AI with the Razr Plus 2024:
- Support for Google's Gemini app, even on the cover screen
- Upcoming Moto AI features for transcription, summarization, and contextual awareness
- AI-enhanced camera capabilities
A More Refined Design
While the overall design remains similar to last year's model, Motorola has made some refinements:
- Sturdier hinge with improved dust protection
- Vegan leather back with unique textures for each color option
- Slightly thicker body to accommodate the larger battery
The Competition Heats Up
With Samsung rumored to increase prices for its upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6, Motorola's decision to keep the Razr Plus 2024 at $999 could make it an attractive option for those looking to enter the foldable market.
The Motorola Razr Plus 2024 will be available for pre-order on July 10th, with full availability starting July 24th. It remains to be seen how well Motorola can deliver on its AI promises and if the camera improvements will truly elevate the phone's capabilities, but on paper, the Razr Plus 2024 looks to be a compelling option in the growing foldable smartphone market.
Update: Monday July 08 13:07
AT&T will offer the Razr Plus 2024 for $5.99 per month to both new and existing customers, with no trade-in required. Cricket Wireless will offer the standard Razr 2024 for $199.99 outright starting July 25th, featuring a MediaTek Dimensity 7300X chipset. The new Razr Plus features a redesigned hinge that is easier to operate one-handed and allows for various Flex View positions. The main screen is a 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate, while the external screen also supports a 165Hz refresh rate. Users can access the Google Gemini app directly from the external display by pressing and holding the power button. Despite improvements, the device still lacks a dust resistance rating.
