Google's New Nest Learning Thermostat: AI-Powered and Apple Home Compatible

Google has unveiled its 4th generation Nest Learning Thermostat, bringing a complete redesign and AI-powered features to its smart home staple. The new model boasts a sleek, watch-like appearance with a 60% larger domed glass display and enhanced capabilities.

Key features of the new Nest Learning Thermostat include:

  • AI-powered Smart Schedule for more accurate temperature adjustments
  • Dynamic Farsight display that changes based on proximity
  • Matter compatibility for integration with Apple Home and other smart home systems
  • New Nest Temperature Sensor included in the box
  • Enhanced energy-saving features like Natural Heating and Cooling

The thermostat's redesigned look takes cues from Google's Pixel Watch, featuring a circular display with customizable faces. Available in Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian finishes, the device aims to blend seamlessly with home decor.

Google has integrated its Soli radar technology to improve presence detection and enable the Dynamic Farsight feature. This allows the thermostat to display different information based on how close a person is to the device.

One of the most significant upgrades is the AI-powered Smart Schedule feature. This system learns from user habits and local weather conditions to create more efficient heating and cooling schedules. Users can choose to have the thermostat suggest changes or implement them automatically.

The inclusion of Matter support marks a significant step for cross-platform compatibility. This allows the Nest Learning Thermostat to work natively with Apple Home and other Matter-enabled smart home systems.

Energy efficiency remains a core focus, with new features like Natural Heating and Cooling and Adaptive Eco mode. These systems take into account factors like sunlight and outdoor temperatures to optimize HVAC usage and potentially reduce energy bills.

The new Nest Learning Thermostat is priced at $279.99 in the US and $379.99 in Canada. It comes with the redesigned Nest Temperature Sensor, which can be purchased separately for $39.99 or in a three-pack for $99.99. The device is available for pre-order now and will start shipping on August 20th.

While the price point is higher than its predecessor, the inclusion of the temperature sensor and advanced AI features may justify the cost for many smart home enthusiasts. However, it's worth noting that the device is currently only available in North America, with no immediate plans announced for international release.

As smart home technology continues to evolve, Google's latest offering demonstrates a commitment to both aesthetic design and functional innovation in the thermostat space.
