Google Rolls Out Final Android 14 Update for Pixels, Addresses Security Vulnerability

Google has begun rolling out what is likely to be the final Android 14 update for Pixel devices before the anticipated release of Android 15 next month. This September security patch brings important fixes and improvements to a wide range of Pixel smartphones and tablets.

Key Updates

  • Security Vulnerability Addressed: The update removes a third-party APK called Showcase.apk, which was originally created for Verizon in-store demo devices but is no longer in use. This addresses a potential security vulnerability that cybersecurity firm iVerify had identified as a possible vector for attacks.

  • Wi-Fi Improvements: Pixel 9 series devices will benefit from enhanced wireless stability and performance in certain conditions.

  • Security Patches: The update includes fixes for 36 security issues, ranging from high to critical severity, as outlined in the September 2024 Android Security Bulletin.

Affected Devices

The update is rolling out to a wide range of Pixel devices, including:

  • Pixel 6 series
  • Pixel 7 series
  • Pixel 8 series
  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel Tablet
  • Pixel 9 series

Notably, the Pixel 5a has reached its end-of-life and will not receive this or any future updates.

Looking Ahead

While this update marks the end of the line for Android 14 on Pixel devices, users won't have to wait long for the next major upgrade. Android 15 has been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and is expected to roll out to Pixel devices in the coming weeks, likely in October.

For now, Pixel owners are encouraged to install this important security update as soon as it becomes available on their devices. The update can be accessed through the device's Settings menu under System > Software update.
