Google's latest update to ChromeOS introduces several productivity-enhancing features that bring Chromebooks closer to the functionality of Windows PCs. ChromeOS 128 rolls out a suite of tools aimed at improving multitasking, accessibility, and user privacy.
Snap Groups: A Familiar Multitasking Tool
The standout feature of ChromeOS 128 is the introduction of Snap Groups, reminiscent of Windows 11's Snap Layouts. This feature allows users to pair two windows side-by-side, creating a unified group that can be moved, resized, or separated as needed. It's a significant upgrade to ChromeOS's multitasking capabilities, making it easier for users to work with multiple applications simultaneously.
AI-Powered OCR in the Camera App
Another notable addition is the integration of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) into the ChromeOS Camera app. Leveraging machine learning, this feature can extract text from images captured by the camera, supporting 77 languages and various document orientations. Users can search for words within images, have documents read aloud, and even create searchable PDFs. While disabled by default, OCR can be activated through the Settings menu.
Improved Accessibility Features
ChromeOS 128 also enhances accessibility with improved integration between the Magnifier tool and ChromeVox, the built-in screen reader. The Magnifier now automatically follows the text being read by ChromeVox, ensuring users with visual impairments never lose their place during screen reading sessions.
Privacy and Audio Enhancements
Google has simplified privacy controls for camera and microphone permissions, consolidating them in the Apps section of the Settings menu. Additionally, Audio Gain Control is now enabled by default, optimizing microphone volume automatically for video calls and other applications.
Gradual Rollout
As with previous updates, ChromeOS 128 is being released in phases. Users can check for the update manually through the Settings menu or wait for the automatic update notification.
