Apple has finally updated its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, after a four-year hiatus. However, the changes may leave some fans wanting more.
The most significant update to the AirPods Max is the switch from Apple's proprietary Lightning port to the more universal USB-C for charging and data transfer. This change brings the headphones in line with the rest of Apple's product lineup and complies with new EU regulations.
While the core features remain largely unchanged, Apple has introduced five new color options to freshen up the lineup:
- Midnight
- Blue
- Purple
- Orange
- Starlight
These new hues offer users more choices to match their style or complement their other Apple devices.
In terms of software enhancements, the new AirPods Max will support Personalized Spatial Audio when paired with devices running iOS 18. This feature aims to create a more immersive and tailored listening experience for music, podcasts, and calls.
Despite hopes for more substantial upgrades, other aspects of the AirPods Max remain the same:
- The $549 price tag holds steady
- No changes to the controversial case design
- Weight and overall build remain unchanged
- Still uses the H1 chip, not the newer H2 found in other AirPods models
For those interested in the refreshed AirPods Max, pre-orders begin today (September 9, 2024), with general availability starting September 20, 2024.
While the USB-C port is a welcome addition, the minimal nature of this update may disappoint those who were hoping for more significant improvements to Apple's flagship headphones.
