Meta has rolled out a new software update (v69) for its Quest virtual reality headsets, introducing several quality-of-life improvements ahead of the upcoming Meta Connect 2024 conference.
Key highlights of the update include:
Hey Meta Wake Word for AI Assistant
Users in the US and Canada can now activate Meta AI hands-free by saying Hey Meta. This allows easier access to the AI assistant's capabilities like real-time conversations and computer vision analysis.
Enhanced Multitasking
The multitasking windows feature introduced in v67 is now out of experimental status. Users can have up to 6 windows open simultaneously - 3 side-by-side and 3 freeform. Spatial audio has been added to make the experience more immersive.
A new Seamless Multitasking option in Experimental Settings allows keeping the universal menu and up to 3 windows open while in immersive experiences.

Library Decluttering
A new Remove from library option helps users hide unused demos, uninstalled apps, and Horizon Worlds to reduce clutter.
Stylus Support
Compatible tracked styluses like the upcoming Logitech MX Ink can now interact with the universal menu and some apps like Painting VR. A new Stylus settings menu allows customizing button mapping and pressure sensitivity.

Other Improvements
- Quicker Bluetooth pairing for accessories
- Content-adaptive backlight controls for better contrast and battery life
- Automatic stationary boundary setup in Horizon Home
The update is available now for Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. It sets the stage for potential hardware and software announcements at Meta Connect 2024, scheduled for September 25-26. Rumors suggest we may see a more affordable Meta Quest 3S model unveiled at the event.
While this update focuses on refinements rather than major new features, the multitasking and AI improvements should enhance the overall Quest experience for many users. The addition of stylus support also opens up new creative possibilities in VR/MR applications.
