DJI Challenges GoPro with Osmo Action 5 Pro: 4-Hour Battery Life and Pro-Level Features

DJI has thrown down the gauntlet to GoPro with its latest action camera, the Osmo Action 5 Pro. This new offering brings several impressive upgrades that could give GoPro a run for its money in the competitive action camera market.

Extended Battery Life and Improved Performance

One of the standout features of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is its impressive battery life. DJI claims up to four hours of continuous recording on a single charge, doubling the runtime of its main competitor, the GoPro Hero 13 Black. This extended battery life is made possible by a new power-efficient 4nm chip.

The camera also boasts a new 1/1.3-inch image sensor capable of capturing 40-megapixel stills and offering an industry-first 13.5-stop dynamic range. This promises improved image quality and better low-light performance, especially when shooting 4K/60fps video.

Enhanced Durability and Usability

DJI has improved the Osmo Action 5 Pro's durability, with waterproofing down to 20 meters (66 feet) - twice the depth rating of many competitors. The camera can also operate in temperatures ranging from -4°F (-20°C) to 113°F (45°C).

The device features slightly larger OLED displays on both the front and back, with reduced bezels for a more modern look. These screens are said to produce richer and more vibrant colors, enhancing the user experience.

Unique Features and Connectivity

The Osmo Action 5 Pro introduces several unique features, including:

  • Super slow-motion capture at 1080p/960fps (achieved through intelligent frame interpolation)
  • A built-in pressure sensor
  • 47GB of fast built-in storage
  • Support for DJI Mic 2 Bluetooth microphones
  • Wi-Fi 6 and USB 3.0 connectivity

Pricing and Availability

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is available now, starting at $349 / £329 / €379 for the standard combo kit. This positions it competitively against the GoPro Hero 13 Black in terms of pricing.

While DJI has made significant strides with this release, the action camera market remains fiercely competitive. GoPro's recent introduction of interchangeable lenses and Insta360's rumored upcoming release of an 8K-capable camera mean that the battle for supremacy in this sector is far from over.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro represents a solid step forward for DJI, particularly in areas like battery life and low-light performance. However, its limitation to 4K video resolution may be a sticking point for some users who are looking for higher resolutions offered by competitors.

As the action camera market continues to evolve, it's clear that DJI is positioning itself as a serious contender, pushing the boundaries of what these compact devices can achieve.
