Samsung has begun mass production of its latest PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive, the PM9E1, which boasts industry-leading performance that could signal a new era for high-speed storage.
Unprecedented Speed and Efficiency
The PM9E1 achieves sequential read speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s and write speeds of 13.5 GB/s, effectively doubling the performance of its PCIe 4.0 predecessor. This puts Samsung's new drive at the forefront of SSD technology, surpassing even the Crucial T705, which was previously the fastest with 14.5 GB/s read but only 12.7 GB/s write speeds.
What sets the PM9E1 apart is not just its raw speed, but also its improved efficiency. Samsung claims over 50% better power efficiency compared to previous generations, thanks to its new in-house 5nm controller. This could potentially solve one of the biggest hurdles facing PCIe 5.0 adoption: heat generation and power consumption.

Capacity and Durability
The drive will be available in capacities ranging from 512GB to 4TB, with the latter specifically targeted at users working with AI-generated content, high-resolution video, and other data-intensive tasks. Samsung has also doubled the drive's durability rating to 2,400 TBW (Terabytes Written), promising enhanced longevity for heavy workloads.
Implications for Gaming and AI
While PCIe 5.0 SSDs have yet to make a significant impact in the gaming world, the PM9E1's combination of speed and efficiency could change that. As new platforms with increased PCIe 5.0 lane support emerge, such as rumored Z890 motherboards, we may see a shift in the storage landscape.
YongCheol Bae, executive vice president of memory product planning at Samsung, emphasized the drive's potential in the AI era, stating it will offer a robust foundation for global customers to effectively plan their AI portfolios.
Looking Ahead
It's worth noting that while sequential read/write speeds are impressive, real-world performance often depends more on random read/write speeds and other factors. Additionally, the PM9E1 is likely to be initially focused on OEM and enterprise markets before reaching general consumers.
As we await more details on pricing and availability, the PM9E1 represents a significant step forward in storage technology. If Samsung can deliver on its promises of speed and efficiency, we may finally see PCIe 5.0 SSDs become a viable and desirable option for high-performance computing and gaming systems.
