Google TV Expands Features Across Devices, But Adds Controversial Folder

Google is rolling out significant updates to its Google TV platform, bringing new features to a wider range of devices while also introducing a contentious change to some users' home screens.

Expanded Features Coming to All Google TV Devices

In the coming weeks, Google will extend the software features of its new Google TV Streamer to all Google TV devices. This includes Google TVs, Chromecasts with Google TV, and third-party Google TV streamers. The update brings several notable additions:

  • Smart Home Control Panel : Accessible via the quick settings, this panel allows users to control Google Home-connected devices directly from their TV. Users can adjust lights, trigger automations, and even view live camera feeds.

  • Sports Page : A new addition to the 'For You' tab (US-only) that aggregates sports content from various services, including YouTube highlights.

  • Gemini-Powered AI Features : These include AI-generated summaries, reviews, and season breakdowns to help viewers choose content.

  • Enhanced Ambient Mode : Now capable of creating AI-generated screensaver art.

Controversial General Interest Folder

While expanding features, Google has also introduced a potentially frustrating change for some users. A new, unremovable General Interest folder has appeared on the home screens of some Google TV Streamer users, particularly in certain regions like France.

This folder contains shortcuts to local streaming apps, which cannot be removed or reorganized. For instance, French users find themselves unable to delete unwanted app shortcuts or move frequently used apps out of the folder. This change has been met with criticism from users who prefer to organize their own app layouts.

Google TV's Growing Reach

Google revealed that Google TV now boasts over 270 million monthly active devices, making it the top streaming platform globally. The company is expanding into new markets, including Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Additionally, Google is partnering with more hardware brands to integrate Google TV, including Asus smart monitors and projectors from Epson, XGIMI, and Vankyo.

As Google TV continues to evolve, it's clear that the platform is aiming to become more feature-rich and widely available. However, the company may need to address user concerns about forced content organization to maintain satisfaction among its growing user base.
