The Drive Behind the Development

Raspberry Pi's founder Eben Upton revealed that the development of their own USB hub was driven by frustration with existing market options. Users typically had to choose between expensive, reliable hubs or cheaper alternatives that compromised on quality and compatibility. This new offering aims to bridge that gap, providing a solution that combines reliability with affordability.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The hub is built around the Infineon CYUSB3304 controller, featuring a single USB 3.0 Type-A input that expands into four downstream USB 3.0 Type-A ports. Performance testing has shown impressive data transfer speeds ranging from 232 to 278 MB/s, making it suitable for most applications. While not matching the 840MB/s speeds of PCIe Gen 3 SSDs, it provides ample bandwidth for typical use cases.

Power Management and Flexibility

A standout feature is the inclusion of a USB-C port for optional external power supply, supporting 5V at 3A (15W max). This additional power input proves particularly valuable for users connecting power-hungry peripherals, with testing showing improved performance when external power is supplied. During tests, write speeds increased by 10 MB/s when using external power with high-performance storage devices.

Quality and Long-term Support

Unlike generic alternatives, this hub features a custom-designed PCB by Raspberry Pi, emphasizing the company's commitment to quality. The product is guaranteed to remain in production until January 2030, ensuring long-term support and availability. At $12 (£10), it offers excellent value while maintaining the signature Raspberry Pi design aesthetic and reliability standards.

Compatibility and Availability

The hub works seamlessly with all Raspberry Pi models and is expected to be compatible with most computers. It's available through official Raspberry Pi resellers, making it easily accessible to the global maker community.
