Star Citizen Alpha 4.0 Launches With New Star System and 500-Player Servers After 12 Years in Development

After more than a decade of development and USD $767 million in crowdfunding, Cloud Imperium Games has reached a significant milestone with the release of Star Citizen Alpha 4.0, marking one of the most substantial updates to the controversial space simulation game since its inception.

  • Total Crowdfunding: USD $767 million
  • Server Capacity: Increased from 100 to 500 players
  • New Content in Alpha 4.0:
    • Pyro Star System (6 planets, 6 moons)
    • First jump point implementation
    • Server meshing technology
    • Starting bonus: 20,000 aUEC per player

Major Update Brings New Star System

The Alpha 4.0 update introduces the Pyro star system, the second complete star system in the Star Citizen universe. This lawless frontier features six planets and six moons, along with numerous outposts and bases. Players can now travel between the original Stanton system and Pyro through the game's first implemented jump point, fulfilling a promise made during CitizenCon 2949.

Technical Advancement with Server Meshing

A revolutionary technical improvement comes in the form of server meshing, dramatically increasing the maximum player count per server from 100 to 500 players. This enhancement transforms Star Citizen into a true MMO-scale experience, potentially enabling more dynamic player interactions and large-scale space battles.

Fresh Start for All Players

The 4.0 update implements a complete server wipe, giving all players a fresh start. To ease the transition, Cloud Imperium Games has provided each player with 20,000 aUEC (Alpha United Earth Credits) as starting capital, while allowing them to retain their purchased ships and hangar items.

Development Timeline and Future Plans

Chris Roberts, the project's chief developer, acknowledges the extended development timeline, describing it as a much longer than anticipated development process. While version 4.0 represents a significant step forward, the road to version 1.0 - considered the commercial release - continues. Additionally, the single-player campaign Squadron 42, featuring performances from acclaimed actors like Gillian Anderson and Henry Cavill, is scheduled for a 2026 release.

Timeline Milestones:

  • Initial Crowdfunding: 2012
  • Version 3.0 Release: 2017
  • Alpha 4.0 Release: 2024
  • Squadron 42 Planned Release: 2026

Performance and Stability

Early player reports indicate improved stability compared to previous versions, though some technical issues persist. Players report occasional station falls, mission failures, and interface glitches, most of which can be resolved with a quick restart. While these improvements are notable, they highlight the ongoing development nature of the project.
