HMD OffGrid Brings Satellite Connectivity to Any Smartphone for USD 199

As satellite connectivity becomes increasingly important for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers, HMD has unveiled its latest innovation at CES 2025. The new device aims to bridge the gap between traditional smartphones and satellite communication capabilities, offering a solution for users who don't have access to the latest flagship phones with built-in satellite features.

A Compact Solution for Global Connectivity

The HMD OffGrid represents a significant step forward in portable satellite communication technology. This compact device, measuring just 93.88 x 60.16 x 12mm and weighing 60g, serves as a wireless bridge between any smartphone and satellite networks. Its rugged design, featuring IP68 water resistance and MIL-STD-810H military protection rating, ensures durability in challenging environments.

Comprehensive Communication Features

The device's functionality extends beyond basic messaging. Through the HMD OffGrid app, users can send and receive satellite messages using their regular phone number. A standout feature is the ability to automatically transmit GPS coordinates at customizable intervals, ranging from every three minutes to every four hours, to up to five designated recipients. The device also includes a crucial Check-in feature for sending pre-crafted safety messages and an SOS function for emergency situations.

Battery Life and Durability

With its 600mAh battery, the OffGrid offers impressive endurance, capable of operating for up to three days on a single charge. This extended battery life makes it particularly suitable for extended outdoor adventures where charging opportunities may be limited.

Subscription Plans and Pricing

HMD has structured its pricing model with two distinct subscription tiers. The Unlimited Plan, priced at USD 14.99 monthly or USD 139.99 annually, offers unlimited messaging and check-in services, with optional live tracking available for an additional USD 4.99 per month. The more economical Freedom Plan costs USD 79.99 annually, providing 350 text messages and unlimited check-ins, with live tracking available at USD 0.10 per ping.

Market Availability

The HMD OffGrid is set to launch this month in major markets including the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, with planned expansion to additional countries throughout 2025. At USD 199 for the device itself, it positions itself as a competitive alternative to existing satellite communication solutions, particularly when compared to more expensive options like Garmin's inReach series.
