Asus Unveils World's First Thunderbolt 5 eGPU: ROG XG Mobile with RTX 5090 at USD $2,200

External GPU solutions are evolving rapidly, and Asus is leading the charge with its latest innovation in portable graphics computing. Following its CES 2025 preview, the company has now officially launched its next-generation external GPU solution that promises to redefine mobile gaming and professional graphics capabilities.

Revolutionary Thunderbolt 5 Integration

The 2025 ROG XG Mobile marks a significant milestone as the world's first Thunderbolt 5-powered eGPU dock. This cutting-edge connectivity provides up to 64 Gbps of PCIe Gen 4 bandwidth for GPU operations and can achieve a total bandwidth of 120 Gbps with dynamic boost. This advancement enables simultaneous high-speed data transfer, display output, and device charging through a single connection.

Compact Yet Powerful Design

Breaking away from traditional bulky eGPU enclosures, Asus has achieved a remarkable feat in miniaturization. The new ROG XG Mobile measures just 208 x 155 x 29.6 mm, making it smaller than many 13-inch laptops. This compact form factor doesn't compromise on power, as it houses either an RTX 5090 or RTX 5070 Ti mobile GPU, with the flagship 5090 variant featuring 10,496 CUDA cores and 24GB of GDDR7 memory.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 208 x 155 x 29.6 mm
  • GPU Options: RTX 5090 (10,496 CUDA cores, 24GB GDDR7) or RTX 5070 Ti
  • Power Supply: 330W
  • Maximum System Power Draw: 600W
  • GPU Power Limit: 150W

Connectivity:

  • 2x Thunderbolt 5 Type-C
  • 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 1x DisplayPort 2.1
  • 1x HDMI 2.1
  • 1x RJ-45 Ethernet (5 Gbps)

Advanced Cooling Solutions

The 2025 model introduces an innovative copper vapor chamber cooler that achieves 30% weight reduction while maintaining thermal performance comparable to solutions with much thicker capillary structures. Combined with redesigned rear vents, the system operates 3dB quieter than its predecessor, striking an impressive balance between performance and acoustics.

Comprehensive Connectivity

The dock serves as a complete expansion station with two Thunderbolt 5 Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, and a 5 Gbps RJ-45 Ethernet port. Power delivery comes from an updated 330W brick featuring active bridge rectifier MOSFETs, which is 150g lighter than the previous generation.

Pricing and Availability

The RTX 5090 variant has launched in select overseas markets at USD $2,199.99, while the RTX 5070 Ti model is priced at USD $1,999. U.S. market availability is yet to be announced, though global rollout is expected to align with NVIDIA's RTX 50-series laptop GPU preorders starting February 25th. Notably, Mac users will need to look elsewhere, as the device is incompatible with Apple Silicon systems.
