Xiaomi has officially unveiled its innovative Modular Optical System (MOS) at MWC 2025, showcasing a custom version of the Xiaomi 15 smartphone that features a magnetic attachment mechanism for a detachable 35mm lens. Unlike traditional clip-on smartphone lenses that often deliver mediocre results, Xiaomi's approach integrates directly with the phone's hardware through a magnetic mounting system similar to Apple's MagSafe technology. This integration ensures a seamless experience that more closely resembles using a built-in camera rather than an aftermarket accessory.

Advanced Technology Powers the Photography Experience

At the heart of Xiaomi's modular system is a 100MP Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor, which is significantly larger than standard smartphone sensors. This larger sensor promises superior image quality and enhanced dynamic range compared to conventional smartphone cameras. The system utilizes Xiaomi's proprietary LaserLink technology to enable near-instantaneous data transfer between the lens and the phone, effectively eliminating lag when capturing high-resolution images. However, hands-on reports suggest that Xiaomi's implementation may be more intuitive and practical, as Realme's approach requires mounting external lenses over the phone's existing camera module, resulting in a more unwieldy setup.

The Return of Modular Phone Design

Xiaomi's MOS represents a potential revival of modular smartphone design concepts, following previous attempts like Motorola's Moto Mods and LG's G5 modules that ultimately failed to gain widespread adoption. The key difference with Xiaomi's approach appears to be the seamless integration and practical utility, addressing many of the friction points that plagued earlier modular systems.
