Final Fantasy 14's upcoming patch 7.2 addresses a serious privacy vulnerability that inadvertently exposed player account IDs to potential stalkers, while simultaneously introducing several long-requested quality-of-life improvements. The update represents Square Enix's commitment to both player security and gameplay enhancement in their critically acclaimed MMORPG.
Privacy Vulnerability Fix
Square Enix is taking decisive action to resolve a critical privacy issue that emerged following Dawntrail's release. The previous update to the blacklisting system, while intended to protect players from stalkers by making blocked players completely invisible, inadvertently created a security vulnerability. This flaw allowed third-party mods to access account IDs rather than just character IDs, potentially enabling stalkers to track victims across multiple character alts.
The patch notes confirm that relevant saved client data has been reset as part of measures to prevent identification of account IDs not displayed in-game. This reset means previously blacklisted characters will appear as (Character name could not be retrieved) in players' blacklists. Users will need to remove and re-register these characters to restore their names, a minor inconvenience that Square Enix acknowledges while emphasizing the importance of these security measures.
Dungeon Quality-of-Life Improvements
One of the most celebrated changes in patch 7.2 is the extension of a feature previously exclusive to Dawntrail dungeons. After beginning a boss encounter in any pre-7.0 dungeon, the shortcut warp will now take players directly to the boss area's entrance. This eliminates the frustrating runback after party wipes, saving significant time and reducing friction during dungeon runs across the entire game.
Movement Enhancements
After ten years—as game director Naoki Yoshida humorously noted—players will finally be able to call their mounts while moving. Additionally, the patch introduces a new 'Jog' status effect that activates automatically after Sprint expires, providing a modest but unlimited speed increase until manually deactivated or until the player enters combat.
Graphical Improvements
The patch continues Square Enix's planned game-wide graphical overhaul following Dawntrail's update. Improvements include enhanced shadow quality, slight tweaks to player character models based on community feedback, and visual upgrades to almost every major city in the game. Players can claim a free Fantasia (character appearance change item) from the Wandering Moogle in Old Gridania until patch 7.3 launches.
Content Reorganization
The Expert Dungeon roulette has been streamlined to include only the new 7.2 dungeon The Underkeep and the 7.1 dungeon Yuweyawata Field Station. Other level-100 dungeons have been moved to a new Level Cap Dungeons roulette category. The first tier of the Arcadion Raid and the Jeuno: The First Walk Alliance Raid have been added to their respective duty roulettes, which will now award the new Allagan Tomestones of Mathematics.
