The Shenzhen 8K Ultra High Definition Video Industry Collaboration Alliance, comprising over 50 Chinese companies including TCL, HiSilicon, Hisense, and Huawei, has announced the General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI). This new standard aims to compete with established interfaces like HDMI and DisplayPort by offering significantly higher bandwidth and power delivery capabilities in a single cable solution. GPMI represents a substantial leap forward in connectivity technology, designed specifically with 8K video content in mind.

GPMI Offers Two Connector Types With Impressive Specifications

The GPMI standard comes in two variants. The proprietary Type-B connector delivers an impressive 192 Gbps of bandwidth alongside 480W of power delivery. Meanwhile, the USB Type-C compatible version offers 96 Gbps bandwidth with 240W power delivery. The Type-C variant has reportedly already received approval from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), potentially easing its adoption in the broader market.
