Keen Games' survival RPG Enshrouded continues to thrive in early access with a significant milestone and exciting new content on the horizon. The developer has announced that the game has surpassed 4 million players since its January 2024 launch, reaching this achievement just 8 months after celebrating 3 million players. To mark this success, Keen Games has unveiled details about the game's sixth major update, Thralls of Twilight, scheduled for release in May 2025.
A Rebirth of the Shroud
The upcoming Thralls of Twilight update focuses primarily on overhauling the shrouded areas of the game, which the developers felt were not strong enough in their current state. Creative Director Antony Christoulakis explained that these mysterious regions needed more variation and challenge, as some areas were a bit too empty or featured repetitive dangers. The update aims to transform these zones with improved topology, additional points of interest, and new mechanics that make combat more engaging.

New Nighttime Adventures
Nighttime gameplay is receiving a significant overhaul in the update, giving players compelling reasons to venture out after dark rather than simply sleeping through the night. While Keen Games is keeping specific details under wraps, Christoulakis hinted that certain elements will only appear at night and will be essential for solving particular challenges. This change promises to add a new dimension to the game's exploration and survival mechanics.
Weapon Customization with Gems
One of the most intriguing additions in the Thralls of Twilight update is a new weapon customization system featuring special gems. Players will be able to find these gems during combat or in treasure chests throughout the world. Each gem contains unique abilities and effects that can be inserted into weapons with available slots, with higher rarity weapons having a greater chance of featuring these slots.
The gem system adds depth to character progression, as players can enhance these gems and carry their preferred effects throughout their journey, effectively allowing the gems to level alongside them. However, utilizing this system won't be straightforward – players will need to locate special forges hidden in dangerous areas, primarily within the shroud, to unlock weapon slots and insert gems.
Fearsome New Enemies
The update introduces a host of new enemies described as creeping, crawling, and stalking through the night. Based on preview footage, players can expect to encounter alien spider-like creatures, giant hammer-wielding ogres, massive scarabs, and jellyfish-like entities. These new foes will provide fresh challenges and likely drop new materials needed for crafting enhanced weapons and gear.

Looking Ahead
While the Thralls of Twilight update brings significant additions to Enshrouded, some highly requested features are still in development. Most notably, Keen Games confirmed they are working on adding water to the game's dynamic voxel-based world, though this presents unique technical challenges and won't be part of the May update.
Enshrouded is currently available in early access and isn't expected to reach its full 1.0 release on consoles and PC until Spring 2026.
