CMF Phone 2 Pro Launches at $279 With Triple Camera System, But US 5G Support Limited

Nothing's budget-friendly sub-brand CMF has unveiled its latest smartphone offering, bringing premium features to the mid-range market. The CMF Phone 2 Pro arrives as the successor to last year's CMF Phone 1, positioning itself as a compelling alternative to established budget options from Samsung, Motorola, and even Google's more expensive Pixel A series.

Design and Customization

The CMF Phone 2 Pro embraces Nothing's signature bold aesthetic while introducing a fresh, colorful design approach. Available in Orange, Light Green, White, and Black, the device maintains the brand's modular philosophy with a customizable back panel that supports various screw-in accessories. At just 7.8mm thick and weighing 185 grams, it's Nothing's slimmest phone to date and offers IP54 protection against dust and water splashes. The Light Green variant features a particularly elegant frosted glass-like texture on the back paired with a metallic frame, striking a balance between boldness and sophistication.

Display Technology

The smartphone features a substantial 6.77-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,080 × 2,392 pixels. The screen supports a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations, while offering impressive brightness capabilities with 3,000 nits peak brightness for HDR content and 1,300 nits for outdoor visibility. Additional display specifications include HDR10+ support, 2160Hz PWM dimming for reduced eye strain, a responsive 480Hz touch sampling rate, and protective Panda Glass.

Performance and Storage

Under the hood, the CMF Phone 2 Pro is powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 7300 Pro processor, which Nothing claims delivers 10% faster CPU and 5% faster GPU performance compared to its predecessor. The chip is paired with 8GB of RAM and comes in 128GB and 256GB storage variants, though US retailers will only offer the 256GB model. Notably, the device includes microSD card support for up to 2TB of additional storage—a feature increasingly rare in modern smartphones.

Camera Capabilities

The camera system receives a significant upgrade with a triple rear setup. The primary camera features a 50MP 1/1.57-inch sensor with an f/1.88 lens and electronic image stabilization, reportedly capturing 64% more light than the Phone 1. This is complemented by a 50MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom, plus an 8MP ultra-wide lens with a 119.5-degree field of view. For selfies, there's a 16MP front-facing camera. The system can record 4K video with improved stabilization compared to its predecessor.

Battery Life and Charging

The CMF Phone 2 Pro houses a 5,000mAh battery supporting 33W fast charging and 5W reverse wired charging. Nothing claims the device can deliver up to 47 hours of voice calls or 22 hours of YouTube streaming on a single charge. The company also states that the battery will retain 90% or more of its capacity even after 1,200 charging cycles, equivalent to approximately 3.5 years of use.

Software Experience

Running Nothing OS 3.2 based on Android 15, the CMF Phone 2 Pro comes with a clean, minimalist interface featuring distinctive widgets and smooth animations. The device includes Nothing's AI-powered Essential Space, accessible via a dedicated Essential Key on the right edge. This feature allows users to quickly organize thoughts, screenshots, and photos with AI assistance. Nothing has committed to providing three years of Android OS updates and six years of security patches for the device.

Pricing and Availability

The CMF Phone 2 Pro is priced at USD$279 for the 256GB model in the US, representing strong value given its feature set. However, US availability comes with a significant caveat—the phone is only accessible through Nothing's developer-focused Beta Program, and like previous Nothing phones, it lacks 5G support for AT&T users. Even Verizon and T-Mobile subscribers may experience inconsistent 5G connectivity due to limited compatibility with key US 5G bands.

Complementary Audio Products

Alongside the Phone 2 Pro, CMF has introduced three new earbuds: the CMF Buds 2a, Buds 2, and Buds 2 Plus, priced at USD$49, USD$59, and USD$69 respectively. The earbuds differ primarily in driver size and sound quality, with the Buds 2 Plus offering the best battery life in the lineup—up to 14 hours with ANC off and 61.5 hours with the charging case. All models feature improved voice clarity for calls thanks to Clear Voice Technology 3.0 and come in various colorful options with matte-finished cases.
