OPPO is set to shake up the mid-range smartphone market with its upcoming Reno12 series, but not quite in the way many expected. As the global launch approaches, it's becoming clear that the international versions will differ significantly from their Chinese counterparts.
A Tale of Two Chipsets
The most notable change is in the heart of these devices. While the Chinese Reno12 Pro boasts the powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Plus, the global variant is taking a more modest approach with the Dimensity 7300. This shift isn't limited to the Pro model; the standard Reno12 is also swapping its Dimensity 8250 for the 7300.
MediaTek and OPPO claim to have optimized the Dimensity 7300 for exceptional power efficiency, but it remains to be seen how this will impact real-world performance compared to the Chinese models.
Camera Compromises?
The camera setup is also seeing some adjustments. The global Reno12 Pro is expected to feature a 50MP IMX882 (LYT-600) main sensor, rather than the 50MP IMX890 found in the Chinese version. The standard Reno12 globally will sport a 50MP + 8MP + 2MP triple camera array, losing the 50MP telephoto lens of its Chinese counterpart.
Shared Strengths
Despite these changes, both global models retain some impressive features:
- 6.7-inch AMOLED display (1080p, 120Hz refresh rate, 1,200 nits peak brightness)
- 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging
- 12GB of RAM (with virtual RAM expansion options)
- IP65 dust and water resistance
Unique Features
OPPO is introducing some intriguing capabilities to set the Reno12 series apart:
- BeaconLink: This feature enables voice calls without cellular coverage, functioning like a high-tech walkie-talkie with a range of up to 200 meters.
- AI Toolbox: Leveraging Google's Gemini model, this suite includes AI Write, AI Speak, and AI Summary for enhanced productivity.
- Advanced Portrait Modes: The Pro model boasts dual 50MP portrait cameras (rear telephoto and front-facing), both capable of 4K video at 30fps.
Pricing and Availability
Early European listings suggest a price of €580.90 for the Reno12 Pro (12GB/512GB), with the base model potentially starting around €500. The global launch is expected later this month, with Malaysia confirmed to receive at least the Pro variant in the near future.
While the chipset changes may disappoint some power users, OPPO's focus on efficiency and unique features could make the Reno12 series an interesting option in the competitive mid-range market. As always, real-world performance and regional pricing will be crucial factors in determining the success of these devices.
