Despite initial excitement and over 100,000 pre-orders, the R1 has failed to maintain its user base. Lyu disclosed to Fast Company that only 5,000 people—a mere 5% of buyers—are using the device daily, five months post-launch. This stark drop in engagement raises questions about the viability of standalone AI gadgets in a market dominated by smartphones with increasingly sophisticated AI capabilities.

Premature Launch and Ongoing Development

Lyu admitted that the R1 was released before it was fully ready, citing pressure to beat larger tech companies to market. Since its launch, the device has received 16 over-the-air updates aimed at addressing bugs and improving functionality. However, these efforts appear to have had limited success in retaining users.

Limited Functionality and Integration

One of the primary criticisms of the R1 is its limited app support. Currently, it only works with four applications: Spotify, MidJourney, DoorDash, and Uber. This narrow range of functionality has led many to question the device's $200 price tag and its value proposition compared to smartphones.

Tech expert Mishaal Rahman discovered that the R1's interface is essentially a single Android app, raising doubts about the necessity of dedicated hardware.
