Zoom is taking its AI assistant to the next level by transforming it from a simple helper to an autonomous agent capable of completing tasks on behalf of users. This significant evolution in Zoom's technology aims to streamline workplace productivity and enhance collaboration through advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
The Evolution to Agentic AI
Zoom's AI Companion is undergoing a major transformation at the end of March 2025, evolving from a basic assistant to a fully agentic AI system. This upgrade represents a fundamental shift in how AI can enhance workplace productivity. As Smita Hashim, Chief Product Officer at Zoom, explained, AI Companion is evolving from a personal assistant to being truly agentic, which signals a major leap forward in how AI can enhance productivity and collaboration at work. The new functionality combines agents, skills, and models to execute multi-step actions for users without requiring constant human guidance or intervention.
Zoom Tasks: Automating Your To-Do List
The centerpiece of this agentic upgrade is Zoom Tasks, a new feature launching at the end of March. This intelligent system identifies action items from meeting summaries, chats, and emails, then takes the initiative to complete them. For example, if a meeting summary mentions scheduling a follow-up, Zoom Tasks can automatically find a time that works for all participants and set up the meeting. It can also generate documents based on meeting content and create video clips highlighting key moments. The Tasks feature will be embedded directly into Zoom Docs, making it easily accessible within the workflow.
Zoom AI Companion New Features Timeline
- Late March 2025: Zoom Tasks and Voice Recorder feature launch
- April 2025: Custom AI Companion add-on ($12/user/month) becomes available
- May 2025: Meeting Agendas with AI Companion, Live Notes, AI Companion for Workspace Reservation, and Zoom Drive launch
- June 2025: Advanced References for Zoom Docs and Personal Coach feature launch
- July 2025: Data table creation feature for Zoom Docs launches
Voice Recording and Transcription
Also launching in late March is a new voice recorder feature for the Zoom Workplace mobile app. This tool allows users to record, transcribe, and summarize in-person conversations, creating searchable notes that can be revisited later. While similar to existing services like Otter.ai, Zoom's integration of this functionality directly into its ecosystem provides a more seamless experience for users who already rely on the platform for their communication needs.
Meeting Management Enhancements
Coming in May, Zoom will introduce Meeting Agendas with AI Companion to help keep meetings on track. This feature allows hosts to add agenda timers to different sections and receive AI-generated notes during meetings through the new Live Notes feature. These real-time summaries will be available for both Zoom meetings and phone calls, helping participants stay focused and ensuring important details aren't missed.
Hybrid Work Optimization
Recognizing the challenges of hybrid work environments, Zoom is launching AI Companion for Workspace Reservation in May. This intelligent system shows users which days their colleagues plan to be in the office and suggests optimal days to come in based on scheduled meetings. It goes a step further by automatically booking desks or Zoom Rooms for in-person collaboration, streamlining the often complicated logistics of hybrid work schedules.
Document and Content Creation Tools
Zoom Docs is getting several AI enhancements, including Advanced References (launching in June), which can create writing plans based on internal and external sources. In July, users will gain the ability to ask AI Companion to generate data tables from various content sources, including meeting summaries. Additionally, Zoom Drive will launch in May as a central repository for assets across Zoom Workplace, further integrating the company's expanding suite of productivity tools.
Custom AI Companion Add-on
For users seeking more personalized AI assistance, Zoom is introducing a Custom AI Companion add-on priced at USD $12 per user per month, available starting in April. This premium option includes features like custom meeting templates, personalized summary formats, business-specific terminology dictionaries, and integration with internal data and third-party applications. Perhaps most intriguingly, it includes Custom Avatars for Zoom Clips, which can create video messages using an AI-generated version of the user based on a provided script. A personal coach feature is also planned for June release.

Pricing and Availability
Despite these significant enhancements, the standard AI Companion will remain free for users with paid Zoom accounts. The company appears to be pursuing a two-tier strategy: offering substantial AI capabilities in its base product while reserving more customizable and specialized features for the premium add-on. This approach allows Zoom to compete effectively in the increasingly AI-focused productivity space while creating new revenue opportunities from power users and enterprises with specific needs.
Industry-Specific Solutions
Beyond these general productivity enhancements, Zoom is also introducing specialized AI features for specific industries and use cases. These include Zoom Workplace for Frontline workers, Zoom Workplace for Clinicians, Zoom Workplace for Education, Zoom Contact Center, and Zoom Revenue Accelerator. Each offering tailors the AI capabilities to address the unique challenges and workflows of these different sectors, demonstrating Zoom's commitment to expanding beyond its core video conferencing identity into a comprehensive workplace productivity platform.
